Spring weather isn’t just some of the prettiest here in Georgia, it’s also some of the most volatile. It’s not unheard of for one week in April to be sunny, hot, and dry, only to be followed the next week by a freak ice storm!
So, what do spring’s storms mean for your roof?
If your home isn’t prepared, spring storms can have dramatic (and costly!) effects on your roof. Here are the major risks they pose.
By far the most common problem caused – or at least exacerbated – by spring storms is leaking. Every year, anywhere from 10-15 inches of rain fall here in Georgia in the springtime and it tends to come in concentrated bursts. It’s imperative that your roof’s underlayment creates a tight seal between your home’s interior and your roof in order to stand up to the deluge of water.
One of the biggest problem-causers for roofs in spring is debris. Limbs and branches that fell during the last ice storm…built-up pine needles that fell off the tree cover…piles of dead and decaying leaves; these can all wreak havoc on your roof’s ability to funnel and repel water. Having your roof (and your gutters!) cleaned before spring storms start in earnest is a smart way to minimize the impact of debris.
Denting and Bending
Not all of spring’s precipitation comes in the form of water! It’s totally possible to see sleet in Georgia in early spring, and it’s also not impossible to see hail as the year wears on. Hard precipitation can easily dent the crucial components of a roofing system, from the flashing to the fascia to the gutters themselves. If precipitation hits your roof hard enough that you can actually see physical damage from the ground, it’s time to call a roofer.
Is your roof level? Are you sure? Over time, roofing components can become warped or even start to sag. Once that begins to happen, water leftover after big spring rains can pool. Pooling water makes your roof far more likely to leak, but it can also be heavy! That extra weight isn’t good for your roof and can actually weaken its structural components over time.
